Privacy Policy
Last updated October 13, 2026 · applies to Stowra 0.2
The Stowra app doesn't collect, send, sell or share any of your data. It makes no network connections at all. Everything it reads and learns stays on your Mac.
What the app reads
To suggest where a file belongs, Stowra looks at files that arrive in the folders it watches (Downloads, and screenshots on the Desktop, by default):
- the file's name, size, type and dates;
- the web address macOS recorded when the file was downloaded, so it can recognise the site a file came from (for example, pexels.com);
- for screenshots only, the text inside the image, so you can search for it later. The text is read on your Mac by Apple's Vision framework. You can turn this off in Settings, and no other images are read.
It also reads a few other things, only to do its job:
- Moves in your home folder. Stowra learns from where you move files, so it watches your home folder for moves. It skips Library, the Trash, Applications and developer caches.
- File contents, for duplicates only. To spot a download that's identical to a file you already have (like
report (1).pdf), it compares the two files' contents. - App names in /Applications. It reads the names of your installed apps to recognise installers of apps you already have (like
Figma-1.42.dmg).
Where it's kept
Stowra keeps everything in one file on your Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/Stowra/state.json. Only your user account can read it. It contains:
- your routes and settings;
- a history of moves, with file names, folder paths and the sites files came from;
- the text recognised in your screenshots.
Nothing is uploaded, synced or backed up by Stowra. Your own backups, such as Time Machine, may include that file like any other.
No network, no tracking
The app makes no network connections. It has no account, no analytics, no advertising and no crash reporting. Check for Updates opens this website in your browser; Copy Diagnostics copies counts and settings to your clipboard, without file names, paths or screenshot text, and only you decide whether to send them to anyone.
Permissions
macOS asks you before Stowra can see Downloads, Desktop or Documents. You can change this at any time in System Settings, under Privacy & Security, then Files & Folders.
Deleting your data
In Stowra's Settings, choose Reset Stowra… to erase its routes, history and screenshot text. No files are moved or deleted when you do. To remove Stowra completely, turn off Open at Login in Settings, quit it from the menu bar, drag it to the Trash, and delete the folder ~/Library/Application Support/Stowra.
This website
This site uses no cookies, analytics or trackers, and loads nothing from other sites. It's hosted by Vercel, which keeps standard request logs, such as IP addresses, browser type and the pages requested, to deliver and protect the site. Those logs are about visits to this website only, never about the app. Vercel's handling of that information is described in its privacy policy.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new date. Stowra will never start sending your data anywhere without asking you first.
